While cosmetic dentistry is elective, it is basically integrated in any restorative dental procedures today. While dentists of the past took pride to have the perfect functional dental restorations, the materials of choice were often unsightly, such as dental amalgams, gold crowns, unnatural porcelains, and opaque-white filling materials. This had to do with the fact that aesthetic materials with desirable physical and chemical (bonding) properties were not available yet. Evidently, this has changed within the last two decades, and there is no excuse to use dental materials that are not natural-looking, aesthetic, and at the same time strong, well-bonded, and durable.
